Lo-fi is not low effort

Filming it on your phone is a look, not a shortcut. Three things you still cannot skip, and when to go glossy instead.

Every few months, someone tells a client that they should just film it on a phone, because the apps love lo-fi. Then the client films something on a phone with no idea, no light and no edit, and wonders why it flops. Lo-fi is a look. It is not a shortcut.

What lo-fi actually means

Good lo-fi content looks spontaneous and is anything but. The handheld shot was chosen because it feels close. The single take was rehearsed four times. The caption that reads like a quick thought was rewritten six times until it did.

The best lo-fi videos are planned like an advert and shot like a voice note.

Three things you cannot skip

  • An idea. A phone camera does not make a weak idea charming. It just makes it cheaper.
  • Sound. Viewers forgive shaky footage. They do not forgive a voice they cannot hear. Get close to the mic or use a cheap clip-on.
  • A first frame. Lo-fi still needs a hook. Start in the middle of the action.

When to go glossy instead

Launches, product details and anything where texture sells the item usually deserve a proper camera and a proper light. The trick is knowing which posts need to look like you and which need to look like a magazine. Most feeds need both, in roughly a four to one ratio in favour of the casual stuff.

So yes, film it on your phone. Just do not mistake the phone for the plan.

Know someone who needs this? Send it their way.

Theo has shot on everything from a cinema rig to a cracked phone taped to a broom. He believes the first frame is the whole job and the rest is just good manners.
